Congratulations go to athlete Tim Burn for his recent performance in the North of England Indoor Championships, which were held at the EIS Arena in Sheffield on 14th January. Having progressed relatively easily through the heats of the 400m at the indoor arena, he qualified for the final and was in close contention for the title. Unlike the outdoor distance, this requires 2 laps of the tighter 200m indoor track and he lead from start to finish, recording a fantastic time and breaking his old club record with 48.65, which is a fabulous achievement. He now plans to go even faster in a months time on the indoor track and is competing at the UK trials at the same venue on 11-12th February, where he hopes to once again make the final and run another PB. When the season moves outdoors, he hopes to try for a sub-47 seconds clocking, which may give him the chance of a GB vest.
On Sunday 22nd January Ken Harker and Sarah Gregory managed to get places on the start line for the ever-popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon, at York’s Knavesmire Racecourse. Ken was looking for a fast time at the sharp end of the race, while Sarah was simply out to get some training miles in, just 13 weeks after having her baby daughter. With gale force winds blowing around practically the whole of the course, conditions were far from ideal, but Ken was very pleased to finish in 1.20.32, which put him in 48th place overall from in excess of 1700 runners and Sarah clocked 1.42.48 in 709th position, far from her fastest time, but she will now continue training towards the London Marathon in April.
Some fantastic results were enjoyed by Richmond and Zetland Harriers at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Wakefield on 7th January, with an individual gold medal. Three athletes also finished high enough to represent Yorkshire at the Inter-County Championships and two more came very close.
With two athletes in the U13 Girls race, there were not enough for a team result, however, Laura Kirkham got off to a flying start and crossed the line in 26th place, while Isabelle Starkey gained a well-deserved 28th position overall. In the boys event, the team finished 13th, with Harry Robson taking 42nd place, Christian Worner 63rd and Richard Kirkham 66th overall, against some strong opposition from the large city clubs.
In the U15 Girls event, Hannah Najafi enjoyed a strong race to finish in 44th place, while the U15 Boys finished as 8th team. Glen Ient lead them home with 26th place and Max Robson was close behind in 27th position, while Miles Worner also ran well to take 50th overall. The U17 Men had the two familiar faces of Fergus Roberts and Dan Overin competing, who both achieved brilliant results. Fergus crossed the line in 2nd place, to take the silver medal and will now go forward to represent Yorkshire and claim his county colours. Dan achieved a brilliant 8th position and may well find himself on the reserve list for the championships.
The combined Junior and Senior Women’s race, had 4 representatives and Jo Adams had a marvellous run to take 12th place, while Maddy Winzer claimed 17th place and was 3rd Junior, meaning that she also collects her Yorkshire vest. Next across the line was Rosie Adams, running strongly, to claim 70th overall, while team mate Fiona Hughes finished in 104th place, bringing the team into 11th place.
The men had 7 athletes this year and Doug Roberts went on to a great result, taking 39th place from over 220 runners, showing that he is in great shape. Ken Harker also ran well, finishing in 87th position, while Mark Flannery looked strong with 92nd place and Tad Zaranko took 96th in a competitive field. Shaun Purkiss was next across the line in 163rd position, followed by George Harland in 184th and Liam Fletcher rounding off the team in 191st overall. Marc Scott dominated that Junior Men’s race from start to finish, taking the gold medal and being 35 seconds clear of the field, earning himself another Yorkshire vest, while George Robinson ran extremely well to claim 8th place in a competitive race.
Richmond and Zetland Harrier, Marc Scott, was part of the GB team recently taking part in the World Mountain Running Championships in Tirana, the capital of Albania, on 11th Sept 2011. The race started and finished in the botanical gardens in Tirana, comprising of 2 laps, each 4.4K in length, with 500 metres of ascent and some spectacular descents on sand and gravel tracks, where many athletes took nasty falls.
Marc was part of the Junior Men’s team (Under 20), whose race commenced at 10am, when the temperature was already over 35 degrees. He got off to a good start and was in the top twelve runners after the first lap, but in the intense heat he struggled to stay with the leading runners. Nevertheless Marc still managed to finish in a magnificent 17th position overall from the 62 finishers, in a time of 40.06 and was the first GB athlete across the line, with his team mates completing the course in 30th, 41st and 46th positions respectively. This was his first year in this age group and he was quite rightly pleased with his position and hopes to get a top ten place next year, when the Championships are held in Turkey.
Llanberis in Wales was the venue for the Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships on 24th September, which also incorporated the Home Countries Championship Race (Under 18) between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with four athletes competing from each country. The race started and finished in Llanberis High Street, with approximately 800 metres of road running, before climbing the mountain tracks of Moel Eilio in the shadow of Snowdon; the highest Mountain in England and Wales. Marc led the race from start to finish and clocked a time of 35.43 to win the individual gold medal and confirm his place as the top ranked British Mountain Runner in both the U18 and U20 age groups, with his team mates finishing in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. This meant he also collected his second gold medal of the day, as part of the winning team!
Richmond and Zetland Harrier, Ken Harker, has been busy of late, taking on some rather longer distances compared to his usual track races of 800m and 1500m. On Sunday 4th September, he competed in the Tynedale 10-mile Road Race, which incorporates the British Masters Championships, starting at Hexham and finishing at Ovingham, offering a very undulating route on a warm day. Ken finished in 29th place overall and also earned himself a Bronze Medal, as he also placed third overall in the British Masters Championship race. His final time was 60.30, having gone through 5 miles in 30.30 and then managing to achieve a negative split, giving him 30 minutes exactly for the final 5 miles.
He also took part in the Great North Run on Sunday 18th September, the famous and ever-popular half marathon, which is run from Newcastle to South Shields. Despite being held up by crowds of runners for the first 2 miles and the undulation of the course, he ran a fantastic 1.19.36, which gave him 114th place overall, which is a brilliant result, given the number of competitors. He is now looking to take the experience and use it in another half marathon to better his time over the distance in the near future.
RESULTS
Marc Scott has recently added yet another accolade to his growing portfolio, by gaining selection to represent Great Britain in the U20 World Mountain Running Championships, which will be held in Albania on 11th September. This season has been one of great success for Marc, who richly deserves his GB vest and opportunity to represent his country, following several outstanding performances. The trial race for selection was 9.1km with 350 metres of climbing and was held in Witton Park, Blackburn, with the winner and runner-up gaining automatic selection; Marc duly won the race by 9 seconds in 36.51.
He has also been selected to represent England in the U18 Home International Mountain Running Championships, which will take place a bit closer to home in Snowdonia on 25th September. To round off a great month, Marc also won the Yorkshire U18 Fell Running Champsionships, held at Hellifield near Skipton on Saturday 6th August.
Two other Richmond and Zetland athletes have also been putting in excellent performances at the recent Millenium Bridge 5K in York on Tuesday 16th August. George Robinson was 5th overall in a fantastic time of 16.07, which earned him the prize for first U20 athlete. Triathlete Rich Hunt was also quick off the mark, finishing in 16.53 over the distance and producing another great result.
